Medical Direction Consortium
Why was it formed?
The Medical Direction Consortium (MDC) was created in 1994 by a group of EMS providers and physicians to address the problem of Medical Direction for rural BLS Ambulance services and First Responders. With the advancement of care by BLS and first responder services over the past years, the medical director has become a very valuable and required part of every service. A medical director is needed to oversee the ambulance service and first responders training, skills competencies and use of advanced patient care skills and equipment.
What does it provide?
The MDC provides each service that joins with quality Continuing Education and Variance training that is provided to the service at their monthly meetings five times per year. The training consists of a short educational lecture of the subject, a written exam to verify the providers understanding of the subject and “hands-on” skill training (depending on the topic) with the equipment or procedures discussed at the training session. Each service is assigned a Physician Medical Director, 2 Instructors who act at the physicians’ liaison. Each service is also provided with a copy of all medical guidelines, training modules and exams. The instructors for this program are highly qualified and experienced Nurses, Paramedics, or EMT’s and have been assigned to the service based on the level of care the service provides.
The MDC also provides the following services:
· Standardized triage, treatment and transportation guidelines
· The most current information on procedures and medical findings provided by our staff of highly qualified
Physician Medical Directors.
· Consultation services on new equipment purchases and upgrading level of care
· Help in understanding and complying with State/ Federal, OSHA, and HIPAA regulations
· Guidance in development of an internal QA plan
· Access to the latest information on State/National issues that affect provider safety and patient care issues
